Winter Solstice - The return of the Light

The winter solstice, celebrated in the pagan festival of Yule, has always carried a quiet kind of magic for me. It is my favourite day of the year, not because it is loud or celebratory, but because it marks a turning point that can be felt in the bones. This is the longest night, the moment when darkness reaches its peak and, almost imperceptibly, the light begins to return. Yule reminds us that even when things feel heavy or uncertain, hope is already on its way, growing slowly, patiently, faithfully. It is a time to honour the cycles of nature and our own inner seasons, to rest, to reflect and to trust that renewal does not arrive in a rush but in steady increments. Optimism at Yule is not naive, it is rooted in wisdom, in the knowing that life always moves towards the light again, no matter how long the night has been.
